5 Mistakes Most DIYers Make

Tape measure on wooden surface
01

Skipping the moisture test before laying flooring

Subfloor moisture above 75% RH will cause laminate boards to buckle within months. A cheap hygrometer mat test takes 72 hours and saves the cost of relaying the entire floor.

02

Buying drill bits for the wrong material

Standard HSS bits stall on masonry. UK homes built before 1980 typically have solid brick walls that need genuine SDS carbide bits, not the cheap set from the supermarket aisle.

03

Not leaving an expansion gap around flooring edges

Laminate expands 1–2 mm per metre with temperature changes. A 10 mm perimeter gap, hidden by skirting, prevents the characteristic mid-room hump that appears in summer.

04

Painting over bare plaster without a mist coat

Fresh plaster is alkaline and porous. Applying standard emulsion directly produces a patchy, flaking finish. A 3:1 water-to-paint mist coat seals the surface correctly before full coverage.

05

Ignoring thermal bridging in insulation

Cavity fill that stops at the lintel creates a cold bridge at every window head. UK Part L regulations require continuous insulation, and gaps that look minor on paper can cost hundreds per year in heat loss.
